Podcast clips as Shorts after YouTube's originality update: own show
Cutting Shorts from your own podcast is not what YouTube's October 2026 change targets, but template-only clips still look mass-made. What to vary per clip.

If you cut Shorts from your own podcast, YouTube's October 2026 originality change was not written about you. Search Engine Journal notes that YouTube's announcement does not discuss creators cutting Shorts from their own long-form videos (read 2026-10-03). The risk for a podcast channel is different: clips that all share one template, one cut length and one caption look, which YouTube's monetization policy describes as content that feels interchangeable from video to video (read 2026-10-03). Make each clip a decision, not a template output.
This post covers what to decide per clip, and which parts Sume does mechanically once you have decided. It does not promise any reach outcome; YouTube has not published a start date, a re-evaluation schedule or a dashboard for the change.
Decisions that should differ per clip
A clip pipeline can be fully automatic and still make distinct videos if the inputs are chosen per clip:
- The moment: pick it by what was said, not by a fixed interval.
- The hook line: a sentence written for that clip, not a template phrase.
- The length: a clip ends where its point ends, so lengths should not all match.
- The frame: a speaker close-up for one clip, a cover still or a slide for another.
What Sume does mechanically
Video inspect reads one clip already in your workspace and, with transcribe: true, returns a transcript, with segmentation.mode: "sentence" adding sentence segments you can read for the moments worth cutting. Then Video trim cuts each chosen range and Video captions burns the hook and subtitles.
| Step | Surface | Limit or price from the docs |
|---|---|---|
| Read the episode | Video inspect with transcribe | Source up to 1800 seconds; speech-to-text $0.01 per audio minute |
| Cut one clip | Video trim | Output 0.2 to 900 seconds; $0.02 per job |
| Burn hook and subtitles | Video captions | $0.20 per job for a video up to 60 seconds |
| Assemble hook, clip, outro | Timeline 1.0 | $0.10 per output minute rounded up; 1 to 200 video slots |
Longer episodes
Sources over 1800 seconds are over the inspect and trim cap, so split a long episode first; the hour-long podcast guide covers that. For the wider question of what to vary across a batch, see what to vary per row.
