GPT Image 2.5 release date and model ids: Flare and Sunburst
OpenAI's GPT-Image-2.5 Flare and Sunburst carry the snapshot date 2026-09-08. The model ids, dated snapshots, and how Sume names the same two models.

GPT Image 2.5 dates to 2026-09-08. That is the date in the dated snapshot names on OpenAI's model pages: gpt-image-2.5-flare-2026-09-08 and gpt-image-2.5-sunburst-2026-09-08. OpenAI's own announcement page was not readable when this post was written, so the date here rests on the snapshot ids, not on announcement text.
Both models are in OpenAI's Image API, and Sume lists both in its catalog. This post lists the ids so you call the right one; the facts come from OpenAI's model pages and Sume's Image API docs, read 2026-09-29.
What are the model ids?
OpenAI names two models, each with a moving alias and a dated snapshot. Sume uses its own ids, which follow the org/slug pattern of its catalog.
| Model | OpenAI alias | OpenAI dated snapshot | Sume id |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flare | gpt-image-2.5-flare | gpt-image-2.5-flare-2026-09-08 | openai/gpt-image-2.5 |
| Sunburst | gpt-image-2.5-sunburst | gpt-image-2.5-sunburst-2026-09-08 | openai/gpt-image-2.5-sunburst |
Which endpoints does OpenAI support for them?
OpenAI's pages list two endpoints for each model: image generation (v1/images/generations) and image edit (v1/images/edits). Sume folds both into one route, POST /v1/images, which generates from text alone and edits when you add input_references.
Is the older model still there?
On Sume, yes: the docs say ChatGPT Image 2 (openai/gpt-image-2) remains selectable. It lists a shorter option set: quality from low to high and up to 10 references.
How do I confirm the ids in my own account?
Ask the catalog. GET /v1/images/models returns every id with its capabilities, so you never depend on a blog post for a model name.
