How many cuts in a 30-second Short? Timeline's 12 and 8 limits
More cuts do not make a Short original, but Sume Timeline has hard limits: 200 slots, chunking past 12 segments, 8 chained fades. What they mean for pacing.

A common worry after YouTube's October 2026 originality push is that a video with a single shot looks unedited. The fix is not a fixed number of cuts. The right count follows from the point of the video. Still, if you build with Sume Timeline 1.0, a few numbers in its docs (read 2026-10-05) shape what is possible.
| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| Video slots per render | 1 to 200 |
| Minimum slot length | 0.2 s |
| Longest output | 1800 s of audio spine |
| Strategy auto chunks past | 12 segments |
| Chained adjacent fades | 8 maximum, then insert a hard cut |
| Single transition length | 1 s maximum, 50% of the shorter neighbor |
Rough pacing for a 30-second Short
Slots of about 2 to 5 seconds give 6 to 15 cuts in 30 seconds. At 12 or fewer segments the render stays single-pass friendly. Above 12, strategy auto chunks the render, and the docs say single is refused above 12 slots with render_strategy_unsafe. You do not need to do anything, but expect the job to run in chunks.
A 0.2-second minimum slot means you cannot build a strobe of 0.1-second flashes. That is no loss for most stories.
Fit the count to the claim
- A demo of one action: 3 to 5 slots. Show the action whole.
- A comparison: 2 slots per side, 4 to 8 total, so each side gets a few seconds.
- A list of five points: 5 to 7 slots, one per point plus a close.
- A story with a turn: 8 to 12 slots, with the turn landing near 20 seconds.
Why cut count is not originality
YouTube's monetization page, read the same day, asks about insight and perspective, not edit density. A 30-second video of fast cuts with no claim is still a template. Use cuts to pace a point.
If you use fades, remember the limit of eight adjacent. Our post on that error shows the fix: break a run of fades with a hard cut.
Plan your slot count from the script, run the unbilled plan to see segment_count, then render. Vary the count between episodes so the rhythm differs too.
A quick example
Take a 30-second comparison Short. Four slots per side of 3 seconds each is 24 seconds, plus a 3-second opener and a 3-second close: 10 slots in all. That is under the 12-segment chunking threshold and has no chained fades, since every transition is a hard cut. The unbilled plan will report segment_count 10 and one billable minute, which is $0.10 at the public rate.
